Since the moment we arrived in turkey and they offered us crab apples
while looking at our passports
I knew Turkey was special. I have never experienced the kind of genuine hospitality and just friendliness as
here in turkey. Everybody seems excited about life and so eager to
help with any little thing no matter how big the language barrier.
We started out getting a ride from Izmir airport to Kusadasi from the Dutch women sitting beside us on the plane who had rented a car and offered to drive us. Had a great time hearing her story and figuring out our
way from Izmir to Kusadasi. ( it was a team effort and still we made a few wrong turns)
She was entertaining and very friendly.
We then walked into the first hotel we saw.
We hadn't booked anything prior and were a little tired so when the price was right and it included a Turkish breakfast we both nodded happily and are glad we did as it has been fabulous
We had a great Turkish feast for supper, amazingly tender lamb kebabs with vegetables and a strange Turkish alcohol that tasted a little like Sambuca. The owner made sure to tell me not to smell the alcohol while I drink it as it apparently causes extreme
Intoxication:)
I'm not going to even try to describe Ephesus. Of all the historical sites
I have seen this is the most amazing . Our travel book said expect 2 hours for Ephesus, we stayed 4 hours!
And that was in 35 degree heat!
It is magical, and if we left tomorrow having only been there, i would be forever inspired. Fortunately, we are only on day 2 of 22 days:)
Ephesus is our history as humans. Something that can only be described by being there. Definitely the highlight of our trip so far and a huge step towards the essence of life are trying to to experience.
Lastly, in the Dolmus ( mini- van shuttle) we met three men from Iran who were visiting Turkey on vaction and again my words won't convey our wonderful conversation. But they were the most authentic people and so full of heart. We chatted and laughed and then at one point one of them looked sad and asked " what do Canadians think about Iranians?"
He just looked nervous asking the question obviously more nervous about the answer.
I just said to him " I don't know what Canadians think but I have liked every Iranian I've met, so I love Iranians and I'm sure any Canadians that know Iranians feel the same way"
The men looked humble but happy and we enjoyed our chat to Ephesus.
The thing is, I wasn't just being nice, I have liked every Iranian I have ever met. And it made me sad to see him hang his head when he asked me the question.
I learned something today. In discovering the essence of life we need to discover people as individuals NOT as political or religious institutions.
I know my Iranian friends would agree:)
Off to bed, good night all!
