I have never before blogged in my life but I am willing to give it a go! Last time I was in Europe I kept a diary but that was before iPads etc and for anyone that has ever attempted to read my handwriting, i am sure this makes better sense. So if my entries read more like a journal with too much detail than an entertaining blog, bear with me and i will try to get the hang of it!
Well, we have officially landed in Reykjavik, Iceland! Our initial plan was to head straight to the famous Blue Lagoon as it is about 6am and it would be doubtful that we could check into our guesthouse so early. Also, the Blue Lagoon is just 20 min by fly bus from the airport whereas it takes an hour to go into Reykjavik. We are both pretty excited to experience the geothermal pools and the Blue Lagoon in particular is so high in mineral content that people believe it cures all sorts of skin conditions (sounds like Manitou spa!). However, as traveling goes, the Blue Lagoon does not open until 10am so we are just hanging out in the airport until then. We initially considered going for a stroll around the grounds but it feels so cold and chilly here! Interestingly enough, it feels and looks exactly like Vancouver Island but we are Ill equipped for warm clothes. Actually, we just stepped outside to take a photo and I am SO glad I brought a thicker sweater last minute!
Our journey here was fairly uneventful. The flight from Albuquerque to Denver struck me as ironic because it was the bumpiest flight I have ever had and i felt so motion sick! I have anticipated the many auto-rickshaws, buses, ferries etc. that I will be subjected to in the months to come with a certain expectation of motion sickness (and nervousness!) but not from that flight! The entire time I kept focusing on everything you are supposed to do: keep cool, deep breaths, stare out at the horizon (what does that even mean when you are on a plane?! Lol)...but I think I really should have brought some gravol, oh well!
The flight to Iceland went fairly well. We both had the idea to knock ourselves out pharmaceutically so that when we arrived at 6am Iceland time we would be good to go. So here I am, with my ear plugs, blow up airplane pillow, melatonin, and most importantly, Ativan, and I am convinced that these items will transport me into a magical place where sleep is inevitable. I go as far as to feel somewhat superior than the woman beside us with her "new drug that is like NyQuil but without the cough/cold part" (so in other words, an antihistamine)...but nothing worked! I don't know if I am too excited but I didn't sleep a wink and had to feel abashed to watch our neighbor slumber on shamelessly. Lesson learned!
Well, we are soon off to the Blue Lagoon so I will write more later!
