Josh at the Blue Lagoon |
The Blue Lagoon was amazing! I was really looking forward to it and it didn't disappoint at all! I will stand corrected however by saying that Iceland looks like Vancouver Island because while there are some similarities like the lush landscape and mountains, there's a big difference. As we rode the fly bus to the Blue Lagoon, I noticed how rugged and rocky the landscape was. All around are huge, dark, jagged rocks in all shapes (created by volcanic eruptions) smothered in lush green moss. So beautiful! I know there is so much diversity here regarding landscape (glaciers, geysers, waterfalls) but we won't have time to see much more of it. I will not, however, stand corrected about how it feels just like Vancouver Island and apparently it is set to rain tomorrow!
The Blue Lagoon was such a welcome oasis in the midst of our long day of travel. The freakishly, some-what radioactive looking blue water immediately drew me in before I even felt the blissful reprieve it offered from the wind. As soon I sunk into that water, I knew that Josh would have a hell of a time getting me out. Luckily, he loved it almost more than i did so we spent four indulgent hours there! The best part was the rock formation that spewed hot water (100 degrees Celsius!) and warmed up all the areas in it's vicinity. If you stood in the right spot, you could be completely enveloped by steam!
What jet-lag? |
As I said before, they purport the anti-aging, skin healing properties of the minerals in the water so they encourage everyone to try a silica mask which is naturally available from the lagoon. I tried it...maybe I will look sixteen again, either from "anti-aging" properties or perhaps more likely from the nasty break out I will probably have as a result! Either way...
Blue Lagoon Selfie! |
We finally dragged ourselves away, mostly at the urgings of our stomachs, and hopped on the fly bus to Reykjavik. The bus drivers have been so helpful and friendly so that when our bus driver asked politely if we would mind walking to our hotel from downtown rather than drop us off directly, we said of course we didn't mind! However, shortly after being dropped off and being the directionally challenged people (yes it is a real thing!) that we are, we got turned around. Not one ever to make a fuss about nothing, Josh quickly directed us to the nearest cafe for lunch (he has his priorities) and we used the wifi to get directions. Unfortunately the directions are for driving (we have since figured this app out) and after an hour of hauling our 25 lbs packs around needlessly, we find our guesthouse. Then we discover that no one is there to answer the door and we have to call a number that is posted. To make a long story short, Iceland essentially has no pay phones, we eventually borrow one twice because they don't answer the first few times, and it all works out in the end. Although by this point my fatigue is setting in with a fierceness and I try to remember that this is the easy traveling and that puts me in my place rather quickly.
Beautiful Bright Colored Houses Everywhere! |
On the plus side, our guesthouse is very cute and cozy, and a steal of a deal! Also has free wifi, if you couldn't tell lol. Another plus is that we really had a great walking tour of downtown Reykjavik which is quite picturesque and so quaint that you just want to take pictures of the buildings for no reason at all. We also got to talk to some Icelanders while asking for their help and have found everyone to be super friendly. Although the culture does not seem to be like in Mexico where everyone and their dog comes running to offer help, everyone is quite eager to help once asked. Josh and I are trying out a few Icelandic words but the only one I can really say is "takk" (thanks).
We went out wandering the streets and found a cute place called Cafe Paris which had the most amazing carrot cake. We are assuming these calories should be guilt free from hailing our packs around all day! Now we are going to crash in a much deserved way and explore more of the city tomorrow!
